Fluid damping of cylindrical liquid storage tanks
A method is proposed in order to calculate the damping effects of viscous fluids in liquid storage tanks subjected to earthquakes. The potential equation of an ideal fluid can satisfy only the boundary conditions normal to the surface of the liquid. To satisfy also the tangential interaction conditions between liquid and tank wall and tank bottom, the potential flow is superimposed by a one-dim...
متن کاملRecent Advances in Seismic Response Analysis of Cylindrical Liquid Storage Tanks
Japan is in a seismically active area and experiences many damaging earthquakes with loss of life. In 1995, the Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake caused major destruction in Kobe City and in 2011 the Great Eastern Japan earthquake and tsunami caused major destruction in the Pacific coast areas of northeastern Japan. Additionally, recent relatively less destructive earthquakes include the 2003 Tokachi-O...
متن کاملStorage Tank Design
A calculus problem arising in the operation of a storage tank for a chemical processing plant is described. Constructing an appropriate gauge for the storage tank requires computing the volume of water residing inside a tilted cylindrical pipe. The following calculus problem arose in the engineering design of a storage tank facility, and is possibly more interesting and challenging for students...
متن کاملSeismic Effect of Height Fluid Filling on Storage Cylindrical Container
Liquid storage cylindrical containers are built for storing a variety of liquids. The seismic behavior of tanks is, however, quite complex problem. The interaction of tank and liquid can be simplified with the concept of generalized single-degree-of-freedom systems representing the convective, rigid impulsive and flexible impulsive vibration modes. This paper presents the theoretical background...
متن کاملAzimuthal solitary surface wave in cylindrical tank.
This Brief Report is devoted to the study of the solitary surface wave rotating in the azimuthal direction, arising during water drainage from a cylindrical reservoir, when shallow flow conditions are reached. The linear dependence between the wave speed and its amplitude is shown to be similar to that expected from the classical Korteweg-de Vries equation.
